You see it every day. Someone makes an off-color joke and someone else gets offended. The joker immediately pushes back saying that the offended party is “too sensitive” or “it was just a joke” or “we’re just having fun”. The joker is dumping responsibility for an uncomfortable moment on others. Often with accusation of being “too PC” – meaning politically correct.
The offensive joker says it like political correctness is a bad thing. Like being PC is a burden and a problem. It isn’t. Political correctness, at its core, is simple. It is about treating people with kindness and respect.
Kindness and respect. That does not sound so hard. Let’s all try for a bit more kindness and respect. How about it?
